surrounded by a shimmering blue sea and never-ending sprays of white foam erupting from coral
reefs off the shorelines; all were bathed in the diaphanous orange of the Caribbean horizonOn
Tranquility Isle, lamps were gradually turned on inside the last four villas in the row above the
beach at Tranquility Inn, and figures could be seen, by and large walking slowly between the rooms
and out on the balconies where the rays from the setting sun washed over the terracesThe soft
breezes carried the scents of hibiscus and poinciana across the tropical foliage as a lone fishing boat
weaved its way through the reefs with its late-afternoon catch for the inn’s kitchen
Brendan Patrick Pierre Prefontaine carried his Perrier out to the balcony of Villa Seventeen,
where Johnny StJacques stood by the railing sipping a rum and tonic“How long do you think it

“Come on, Judge, what money? I don’t want to appear intrusive, but Washington gave me a

“Ah, yes, Washington,” pronounced Prefontaine, raising his glass to the orange-and-azure sky

    CHAPTER FIVE
Lesson Four:The History of and The Power of Corporation

I remember in school being told the story of Robin Hood and his Merry MenMy schoolteacher thought it was a wonderful story of a romantic hero, a Kevin Costner type, who robbed from the rich and gave to the poorMy rich dad did not see Robin Hood as a heroHe called Robin Hood a crook
Robin Hood may be long gone, but his followers live onHow often I still hear people say, "Why don't the rich pay for it?" Or "The rich should pay more in taxes and give it to the poor
It is this idea of Robin Hood, or taking from the rich to give to the poor that has caused the most pain for the poor and the middle classThe reason the middle class is so heavily taxed is because of the Robin Hood idealThe real reality is that the rich are not taxedIt's the middle class who pays for the poor, especially the educated upper-income middle class
Again, to understand fully how things happen, we need to look at the historical perspectiveWe need to look at the history of taxesAlthough my highly educated dad was an expert on the history of education, my rich dad fashioned himself as an expert on the history of taxes

"How did you feel when I tempted you with a pay raise? Did you notice your desires rising?"
    We nodded our heads
"By not giving in to your emotions, you were able to delay your reactions and thinkThat is most importantWe will always have emotions of fear and greedFrom here on in, it is most important for you to use those emotions to your advantage and for the long term, and not simply let your emotions run you by controlling your thinkingMost people use fear and greed against themselvesThat's the start of ignoranceMost people live their lives chasing paychecks, pay raises and job security because of the emotions of desire and fear, not really questioning where those emotion-driven thoughts are leading themIt's just like the picture of a donkey, dragging a cart, with its owner dangling a carrot just in front of the donkey's noseThe donkey's owner may be going where he wants to go, but the donkey is chasing an illusionTomorrow there will only be another carrot for the donkey

@@@@@We have all heard stories of a businessman
@@@@@We have all heard stories of a businessman who works hard to earn moneyHe works hard to be a good provider for his wife and childrenHe spends long hours at the office and brings work home on weekendsOne day he comes home to an empty houseHis wife has left with the kidsHe knew he and his wife had problems, but rather than work to make the relationship strong, he stayed busy at workDismayed, his performance at work slips and he loses his job
Today, I often meet people who are too busy to take care of their wealthAnd there are people too busy to take care of their healthThe cause is the sameThey're busy, and they stay busy as a way of avoiding something they do not want to faceNobody has to tell themIn fact, if you remind them, they often respond with anger or irritation
If they aren't busy at work or with the kids, they're often busy watching TV, fishing, playing golf or shoppingYet, deep down they know they are avoiding something important That's the most common form of lazinessLaziness by staying busy
So what is the cure for laziness? The answer is a little greed
For many of us, we were raised thinking of greed or desire as bad"Greedy people are bad people," my mom use to sayYet, we all have inside of us this yearning to have nice things, new things or exciting thingsSo to keep that emotion of desire under control, often parents found ways of suppressing that desire with guilt
"You only think about yourselfDon't you know you have brothers and sisters?" was one of my mom's favoritesOr "You want me to buy you what?" was a favorite of my dad
